I’ve never done an audit of my travel, but a ballpark estimate would put me away from home probably 90 days a year. A large percentage of that is spent in New York, and an increasing portion of it in New Jersey. Throw in an occasional West Coast trip or two, a conference somewhere beyond New England, and at least an overnight or two in Portsmouth, NH, and the miles add up.
The New York and New Jersey jaunts alone account for 14,400 miles and roughly 240 hours in the car annually. That’s 10 full days in the car, or the equivalent of a month of 8-hour works days.
The next time you read a complaint from me, though, remind me of the silver lining. At least I don’t have the travel itineraries of these executives.
Example:
George Bell spent 18 months commuting between Brookline and Silicon Valley in the early 2000s when he ran the Internet company Excite@Home, covering so much ground that he’d start flying west to San Francisco on Sunday afternoon and return from the east the following Saturday. The next day, he’d leave his wife and three young sons and do it all again.
I dare not comment further for fear of jinxing myself.

That's awful. I remember my dad always being gone because he was a salesman and that's just what he did. Hopefully you at least have a reasonably comfortable vehicle?
VW Passat. It takes good care of me. It's the iPod that is the savior, though.
