Speaking of Gadling, they also called attention to Popular Mechanic’s slideshow of the world’s 18 strangest airports. It’s a fascinating tour of some of the most remote and challenging runways. I couldn’t resist clicking through all of the pages.
I am surprised, however, that the airport in Culebra, Puerto Rico, didn’t make the cut. It’s among the most hair-raising landings I’ve experienced. Check out this video (not mine), and note of the applause at the end. When Brandy and I traveled to the island several years ago, we had that same grateful feeling upon landing.
I guess threading a couple of hillsides — and taking a steep and quick dip toward the runway — are no match for crossing traffic in Gibraltar, taking off downhill in the French Alps, or skimming beaches in Saint Maarten.
