I was just saying to my wife, Brandy, yesterday that with the office in NY being so quiet this week (everyone is cramming in vacations before the end of the summer; I’ll be taking mine next week), I was actually missing the chaotic comings and goings of the home office. When I called home last night, it was good to hear the two younger kids in the background, yelling and running after each other.
Crazy, eh?
As coincidence would have it, I happened across Jelly today, which reinforced for me that interaction is an important part of the work experience. The concept started me wondering if Jelly could be pulled off in a place like Cape Cod, where more folks are working from home than ever before, but is certainly a lot more spaced out than where sessions have been held so far: Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia.
I love the concept, although the background noise in the video that shows a Jelly session in action makes me wonder how much work actually gets accomplished by the end of the day. But talk about networking with like-minded folks!
I’m guessing a round-robin would work best, so no one person is burdened with hosting.
I think I will wait until the kids go back to school before seriously considering such experimentation, though. Hard to imagine guest workers would stick around very long if the kids were stuck inside on a rainy day….
